This morning in assembly, Mr Hughes showed the school his incredible home-grown Butternut Squash and Kohlrabi. Mr Hughes explained to the children how home grown vegetables were so important in Ireland in the 19th Century, the population whet from six million to four million, some of these travelled across seas to America whilst a considerable amount of people perished in the famine. In these times of terrible famine and hardship, Harvest was so important to the livelihood of this population.
The delicious Kohlrabi was a popular vegetable in Germany during the war and they even ate the leaves to use as much of the produce as possible! Mr Hughes was awarded the prize by Mr Murdock for the best home-grown vegetables!
