Last week, children in Bevendean celebrated Book Week with a whole host of literary-based events and, more importantly, lots of reading practice.

The week of activities leads up to World Book Day, where everyone dresses up as their favourite book character and which, this year, is celebrating its 20th birthday. There were various activities throughout the week to celebrate, such as an Assembly with author Alex English, who told the children all about being a writer and a visit to the Main School Library where the pupils were told a wonderful story by Mrs Keat and made parrot bookmarks and pirate maps.

Indeed the theme of the week was all about pirates, with the culmination being a fun dress-up day where everyone came to school dressed in their best Jolly Roger gear and were entertained by the teachers who sang pirate songs! Mrs Samson handed out various prizes for those pirates that had impressed their teachers the most during the week. Previously the children had welcomed a real, grown-up pirate to Bevendean, with whom they enjoyed a memorable dance and drama session, as well as a ‘secret reader’, who read them an amusing story about pirates in their pyjamas.

Whilst Transition were sailing the Seven Seas, Reception made a visit to Thames Ditton library, where they undertook two pirate story sessions and were shown how to use the self-service computers like real librarians.

Book Week has been another tremendous success in 2017 and, most importantly, with the emphasis on reading for most of the week, the teachers are able to see noticeable improvements in the children’s skillset, which is of vital importance at such a young age.
