Year 4 Visit Butser Ancient Farm

13th August 2018

Year 4 stepped back in time at Butser Ancient Farm!

The children walked amongst constructions of ancient buildings based on real sites, dating from the Stone Age, the Iron Age and Roman Britain.

Pupils were taught some essential Celtic skills, the first being wattling. Children learnt how to weave a fence with hazel rods up to 4m long.

Clunching involved crushing chalk and combining it with mud, straw and water. The resulting mix was then used to build a self-supporting wall.

The children had great fun making pots from clay, straight from the ground, just as our ancestors did.

Pupils also learnt the art of Spinning. They handled a basic spindle to spin wool into yarn which was kindly donated by Butser’s very own sheep!

A truly fabulous day was had by all.
