Battle of Hastings Trip

13th August 2018

On Sunday, 15 October a group of Year 7 & 8 pupils visited Battle Abbey, the site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. There were hundreds of people in medieval costumes and many showed off some of the skills that were around at the time. There was archery practice, medieval music making, an armourer and many more stalls and workshops. We watched a play about 1066 performed by the Time Will Tell team who visit the school each year. There was a description of the two armies in the main arena in the morning and in the afternoon came the main event; a re-enactment of the actual battle on the actual site. This was fantastic and everyone was impressed by the actors in both armies. The predominantly English audience roared on the Saxon army, which is rather ironic seeing that 951 years later most of them have some Norman blood in them. Never mind the result was inevitable, a Norman success and a success for the Danes Hill pupils.
