School Children Quiz Local MP

24th November 2022

Last Friday, a group of pupils welcomed Mr Paul Scully, MP for Sutton and Cheam, to Danes Hill, as part of their PSHCE curriculum.

Mr Scully, an MP and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport was met by a class of Year 7 children from Danes Hill. The children had a collection of probing questions for him, including, “What inspired you to become an MP?”, “What would you do if you were not an MP?”, “What do you do day-to-day?”, “Who has been your favourite Prime Minister?”, “What is the hardest situation you have had to deal with?” and “Do you like Boris Johnson?”.

Meeting and interviewing Mr Scully was a reward for the winners of the Danes Hill School Mock Elections. The talented pupils had organised and run their own political campaign within the school and were successfully voted into power by their peers.

Mr Scully said, “As Minister for Local Government, I want to be out and about visiting local schools as much as I can. It was a pleasure to visit the pupils at Danes Hill School, to hear about their Mock Election and to answer questions on my work and future plans for our government”.

Mr Scully has lived in Sutton for 32 years and over that time he has been a regular supporter of St Helier Hospital, a School Governor, a Governor at Sutton College and a Councillor in Sutton.

As Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Mr Scully works to protect and promote Britain’s cultural and artistic heritage. The department helps businesses and communities to grow by investing in innovation and highlighting Britain as a fantastic place to visit.  Most recently, Mr Scully spoke at the AI & Data Science Conversion Courses and Scholarships Showcase Event, helping address the shortage of AI and data specialists in the UK and increase diversity in the sector.

Mrs Shaw, Head of Danes Hill School said, “It was an utterly amazing opportunity for the Danes Hill pupils to meet and question a local MP, and wonderful to welcome Mr Scully to our school.”.
