A number of pupils had the amazing opportunity of acting as ball girls at the recent Surrey Storm vs Wasps netball match held at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. Their special trip celebrated their hard work as Danes Hill Captains of Sport.
The Year 8’s were thrilled to attend the netball match, not only to watch their favourite team, Surrey Storm in action, but to see their own netball coach, Peace Proscovia, play. Peace has been visiting Danes Hill School this term to train the pupils during their sports lessons, as a specialist guest coach. Peace is Surrey Storm’s goal shooter and has been working with the girls specifically to improve their shooting skills. The children have been very lucky to work with Peace and came away feeling even more inspired having seen her in action during the game. As part of their duties at the match, every Danes Hill School Captain in attendance had the important responsibility of returning the ball to players if it went off the court during the match and all performed their role with fantastic composure. It was a tense and exciting match with a great result for Surrey Storm, beating Wasps 67-59 in the annual Tom Reseigh Trophy, which is played in memory of former Storm Team Manager, Tom Reseigh.
Peace Proscovia is a professional Ugandan netball player. She has returned to the Vitality Netball Super League for the first time since 2017, when she was a driving force for Loughborough Lightening. First arriving in 2015, Peace’s game developed year on year with her eventually leading the league in goals in 2017, netting 812. This was followed with her being awarded Player of the Season and Players’ Player. Filled with excitement before her return, Peace commented “I feel blessed to be given this opportunity. I never thought that I could be offered another contract in England but had faith that somehow one day I would return. I have always admired Mikki’s Austin’s (Surrey Storm Director of Netball) style of leadership and am excited to be under her wing.” Peace is a born leader and has captained the Ugandan National team since 2013, becoming a female sports advocate for the nation.
Looking to share her elite level experience, Peace has inspired the Danes Hill netball players and given them a unique insight into the professional world of netball. Peace has shared some invaluable advice with the girls and worked with individuals to strengthen their skill.
Rob Andrews, Acting Head said, ‘This term the children have been inspired by Peace Proscovia, our guest netball coach, and we thank her for her dedication and time she has given to the children’s netball coaching. Opportunities such as these serve to enhance the Danes Hill School journey and nurture the talent and provide the skills that prove to be lifetime experiences.’
