It was a week to remember for Danes Hill hockey with both the Seniors and the U8s putting in fantastic displays at their respective tournaments.
Firstly, on Wednesday, the Senior hockey team travelled to Ardingly to compete against 24 other schools at the East Grinstead Hockey Academy tournament. The girls coasted through the pool with wins against Croydon High, Roedean, Hazelwood, Hurstpierpoint and Holmewood House. Their progress was made all the more impressive by the fact that they didnt concede one goal throughout the group stage. This pitted the girls against a very strong St Andrews Prep, Eastbourne side in the semi-final. The girls showed fantastic team spirit to fight back from a goal down and secure their place in the final with two well worked goals. In the final, Danes Hill faced up to old rivals Reigate Grammar. It was a very nervous final, with some thrilling action at both ends. It was in the dying moments that Danes Hill managed to force a winner with a superbly taken goal. This win is a fitting reward for the hard work the girls have put in over the course of the season and they thoroughly deserve all of the plaudits.
On the following Saturday, it was the turn of the U8A and B teams as they took part in the St Georges U8 hockey tournament on a soggy and drizzly morning. This was the girls first experience of tournament hockey and they could hardly contain their excitement before the first match. Throughout the course of the morning, both teams played some fantastic hockey and what was most pleasing to see was the improvements they made from match to match. The B team faced some tough initial fixtures, taking on St Georges A team and Danes Hill A team. They showed tremendous character in both matches, only losing narrowly. Results soon improved as they went on the beat Hall Grove A team and draw 1-1 with St Georges B team. This left them tied in 3rd position with St Georges B. Meanwhile, the A team secured three victories against St Georges B team, Danes Hill B team and Hall Grove A team before agonisingly losing the decider against a strong St Georges A team, which left them in second place overall. This was a superb first tournament outing for the girls and we couldnt be prouder of their efforts.
