Danes Hill children of all ages joined together to honour those brave souls who served in World War II.

The school’s normal lessons were awash with World War II memorabilia and the lessons were completely transported back to the 1940s. Whereas normal lessons might consist of reading and arithmetic in the classroom and football on the sports field, just some of the activities on this special day included code breaking, army drills, cooking rations and an air raid shelter simulation. The teachers and children came to school in war time clothing and were treated to a 1940’s style lunch.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the attendance of two historic planes, namely the Spitfire and the Messerschmitt. The children investigated the planes with the utmost admiration, appreciating the wonderful engineering and awesome might of the fighter jets.

As the years roll on and the unimaginable sacrifice of the British people during the world wars drifts further and further into folklore, days like this are of huge importance to ensure the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice are remembered. The admiration was clear to see on the children’s faces as they experienced just one day of what it would have been like to live in Britain during those times.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
