This week it was Science Week at Danes Hill. Throughout the week the children took part in activities and talks all science related. On Monday morning, Mr Andrews and Mr Douthwaite kick-started the week with a bang in assembly showing all the children some amazing experiments, including the famous Elephant toothpaste experiment. In their science lessons, the Year 5 children have been creating their very own bath bombs whilst Year 6 pupils made paper!
To end an exciting week, Years 4 to 8 attended a talk on sky and planets by Colin Stuart. This amazing talk took the children through the journey into space, historical expeditions, what life is like in space and the plans for a Mars visit in thirty years’ time. The children were fascinated by the incredible video footage shown throughout and were tested on their space knowledge and learned some new facts about space and Mars.
The children discovered that when a new rock is found, the person who discovers it is allowed to name it. This means on Mars there are rocks called, Scooby-Doo, Snow White, and Sponge Bob Square Pants! Colin told the children that the first person to walk on Mars is already alive. When Neil Armstrong became the first astronaut on the Moon he was 38 years old. Space agencies around the world are planning our first trip to the Red Planet in 30 years time. This means the first Martian is the age of our children in Years 4 to 8. The talk finished with a question and answer session where the children had the opportunity to ask all of their burning questions about space!
