Fossil Investigations in Year 3

30th January 2019

Year 3 children have been studying different types of fossils and the process of fossilisation in their lessons. 3SAJ explained a fossil is any preserved remains or impression from a once-living thing from a past age. In lasts week’s class the children were archaeologists and dug for their own fossils, using paint brushes and other tools. Once discovered, the children studied their tools and fossils using water and pipettes to clean them and magnifying glasses. This week they made their own fossils, imprinting the pattern from a shell onto plasticine in a cup and then filling the cup with modelling clay which hardens, in time, around the imprint to create a fossil. Some very detailed fossils were created.
