Commemoration through Creation

13th August 2018

As part of our Remembrance Day commemorations, children from Years 1 to 8 made individual clay poppies, inspired by the Tower of London display. With each child making their own unique poppy, this encouraged them to think about the importance of Remembrance Day, and to discuss the significance of poppies as a symbol of remembrance.

The children planted their own poppies on the peanut at the Main School prior to the remembrance service, which was held on Friday 10th November at 10:30am. Putting their own creativity into making the clay poppies added poignance to the service for the children, giving it a personal touch and really encouraging them to consider the sacrifices made by British soldiers, both past and present.

Furthermore, the children were very proud of their creations as works of art as well as symbols of remembrance; they certainly look fantastic on display. The red glitter added to some poppies glistens as the sun sets over school, embodying the hope provided by those who fought for Britain in World Wars I and II.

A huge thank you to the Friends of Danes Hill who funded this event. I am sure you will agree, the poppies look amazing!
