Major Herrick who was the Geography Master from about 1961 to 1963. As my father was in the Army I got on very well with him. He was fanatical about cricket and used to refer to the cricket square as the ‘holy of holies’ on to which you trod at your peril – even it seemed during a match! He unfortunately had false teeth and back in the 60’s dentistry was not what it is now; as a result he suffered from excessive salivation. In the library there was a book called ‘Eric or little by little’ by Frederick Farrar; some wise guy, who is now probably a scrabble expert, had very carefully altered the title on the red spine of the book to ‘Herrick or Spittle by Spittle’! The book remained on the shelf unaltered, and probably unread, until I left in 1964.
