New Building for Bevendean

New Building for Bevendean

16th September, 2007

The sun shone as pupils, staff and governors gathered last Tuesday 11 September for the official opening of the wonderful new classroom block at Bevendean.

The new building, clad in red cedar and sporting an eco-friendly copper roof, will provide eight wonderfully light and airy classrooms for the 150 boys and girls of Reception and Year 1.

The celebratory plaque was unveiled by Mrs Vivien Wolstenholme, widow of Mr Michael Wolstenholme, a Danes Hill governor for many years and a great champion of the school’s building projects. Mrs Wolstenholme told the children how delighted she was to be asked to perform the ceremony, and how much she was looking forward to seeing their new classrooms in action.

Chair of Governors Dame Angela Rumbold said: ‘This is a wonderful day for the school, and a real boost to the facilities of our pre-prep department’.

Also present for the occasion were Michael Wolstenholme’s two sons, Richard and Andrew, and their wives, as well as Mr John Clarke, the architect of the new building, and representatives of Cobalt Green, the major contractor. The guests enjoyed a musical performance by  the children before taking a tour of the new classrooms.
