Year 5 Trip to France
Year 5 Trip to France
15th June, 2008
Day 1 - Tuesday 17 June
Somewhat belatedly - you just can't find reliable pigeons these days - our correspondent writes...
'We have made it safely sous La Manche. Both hotels are very comfortable, and the children have settled in well. Today we visited the Chocolaterie de Beussent - yum! - and after lunch the children had the opportunity to perfect their traditional corn weaving skills at the Tresage de Blé in Clenlau. All the children are now asleep - we hope! - after a very rewarding first day. Tomorrow we visit the First World War sites at Albert. Not so much chocolate tasting involved, but you can't have everything.'
Day 2 - Wednesday 18 June
Our correspondent (dictating from a rather damp street on Thursday morning) continues...
'Today we visited Albert, scene of some of the fiercest fighting of World War One, and visited the Battle of the Somme Museum. The children were particularly fascinated by some of the artifacts that have been unearthed from the battlefield over the passing years. After this we explored the Lochnagar Crater, a huge hole 300 ft across and 90ft deep created when mines were exploded on the first day of the Somme. An awesome sight. Next stop was Beaumont Hamel, where some very knowledgable Canadian students told us about the Newfoundland Regiment (at a time before Newfoundland was a part of Canada) who fought so fiercely. After lunch it was off to explore the labyrinth of tunnels at the underground city of Naours. Finally it was back to the hotels for supper and a quick runaround, and then tired bunnies to bed!'
