The Eco Committee

The government has set a target that every school should be a sustainable school by 2020.

We set up the Eco Committee in 2007 to achieve this target and become an Eco School. The 'Eco Schools' award is an international programme that helps us to achieve sustainability and tries to make safeguarding the environment a high priority in children’s lives.

By following a seven step process, we can look at and address certain issues throughout the school, both on the main site and at Bevendean.

These issues are:

  • transport
  • water
  • recycling facilities/waste minimization
  • litter
  • school grounds
  • healthy living
  • biodiversity

There are three awards available – Bronze, Silver, and the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activites.

We very much hope to achieve the Bronze award and are confident that with the help of our members and the wider school community this will be possible by the end of this academic year. We then hope to work towards and apply for the Silver and finally the Green Flag.

Recently the committeee members from Year 8 have been carrying out audits on a particular area of the programme, the results of which will shortly be posted on this page.

We have members from all parts of the school community on the committee, as well as representatives of Elmbridge Borough Council and the waste management and recycling company SITA. So far, we have held four meetings, and they have all been very fruitful: everybody has fantastic ideas and it’s a great forum for sharing views. We have also taken the Year 8 members to a landfill site at Albury where they were able to get an idea of the colossal amount of rubbish that is thrown away and what is done with it.
