Year 7 CE - Autumn Term 2008
ENGLISH
• This term will continue to prepare pupils for 12+ examinations. There will be regular practice of comprehension and writing.
• Pupils will now receive a mark (out of 25) for all extended writing tasks in line with Common Entrance. The ‘Assessment Descriptors’ can be found in both your child’s exercise book and the ‘English Revision Book’. These pieces will be self-assessed by the pupil and then formally assessed by the teacher.
Comprehension

Poetry
• Critical appreciation and comprehension

Writing
• Writing to persuade: repetition for emphasis; informal or conversational style; selection of information; combining text and images; use of adjectives; use of neologisms (form will be a speech, letter, campaign leaflet or advert)
• Writing to argue: conflicting points of view; facts and opinions; emotive language; statements; commands; rhetorical questions; irony; exaggeration; connectives (form will be an article, letter or formal debate speech)
• Writing fiction (revision of key features: character, setting, description, effective openings etc.)
• Personal writing: focus on ‘autobiography’ and features of this type of writing
Grammar and Punctuation
• Revision of nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, pronouns, prepositions, articles and phrasal verbs
• Revision of paragraphing
• Revision of basic punctuation
• Pupils will sit a grammar test in Week 8
