A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step
The first three years of school - Mini Transition, Transition and Reception - are together called the Early Years. In the Early Years at Danes Hill, we aim to help all children to take their first learning steps in comfort, safety and confidence.
The curriculum is based on elements of the Early Years Foundation Stage principles with learning grouped into three prime areas:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
- Communication and Language (CL)
- Physical Development (PD)
and four specific areas:
- Literacy (L)
- Mathematics (M)
- Understanding the World (UW)
- Expressive Art and Design (EAD)
Our foremost aim is to ensure that every child feels safe, happy and confident at school. In this way we help to create an environment in which children are eager to learn and an active part in their own learning. The Early Years are part of the most exciting and challenging phase of learning and development and it is essential to provide an environment which offers the highest quality provision, with stimulating opportunities and activities.
The art of discovery is extremely important and exciting for small children. Gross motor development is given a very high priority and children enjoy swimming, gymnastics, dancing, fitness and games skills. Early reading skills are developed through the enjoyment of books and stories being read to the children, through mimicry of reading habits and through the teaching of letter sounds and shapes.
By the time our children are in Year 1 at Bevendean (Pre-Prep) they have grown, not just in size but also in their maturity. There is a strong link with the Main School in this year to ensure the boys and girls are ready to move to 'Big School' when they enter Year 2.
